What is Running Pace?
Running pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance. It is most commonly expressed as minutes per kilometer (min/km) in most of the world, or minutes per mile (min/mile) in the US and UK. A pace of 5:00/km means you cover one kilometer every 5 minutes.
The Pace Formula
Pace = Total Time ÷ Distance
Example: You run 10km in 52 minutes. Pace = 52 ÷ 10 = 5.2 minutes = 5:12 per kilometer.
For seconds: (52 × 60) ÷ 10 = 312 seconds per km = 5:12/km.
To convert to min/mile: 5.2 × 1.60934 = 8.37 minutes = 8:22 per mile.
Pace vs Speed — What's the Difference?
Pace (min/km) and speed (km/h) are inverses of each other. Speed = 60 ÷ Pace. At 5:00/km: Speed = 60 ÷ 5 = 12 km/h. Runners typically think in pace; cyclists and triathletes often think in speed. GPS watches show both.
Running Pace Zones for Training
| Zone | Name | Feel | Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Z1 | Recovery | Very easy, can sing | Recovery runs after hard days |
| Z2 | Easy aerobic | Easy, full conversation | 80% of weekly mileage, long runs |
| Z3 | Moderate | Comfortable-hard, short phrases | Fartlek, progression runs |
| Z4 | Tempo | Hard, 2–3 word answers | 20–40 min tempo runs, cruise intervals |
| Z5 | VO2max | Very hard, can't speak | 3–8 min intervals at 5K effort |
How to Find Your Zones
Zone 2 upper limit: Roughly 75 seconds per km slower than your 10K race pace. For a 5:00/km 10K runner, Zone 2 tops out around 6:15/km.
Zone 4 / Tempo: Approximately your 1-hour race pace. For most runners, 10–30 seconds per km faster than half marathon pace.
Zone 5 / VO2max: 5K race pace or slightly faster.
The 80/20 rule: elite runners do ~80% of training in Zone 1–2 and only 20% at higher intensities. Most recreational runners do the opposite and plateau as a result.
Practical Pace Calculation Examples
| Scenario | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 10K in 48:00 | 48 ÷ 10 | 4:48/km |
| Half marathon in 2:05:00 | 125 ÷ 21.0975 | 5:55/km |
| Marathon in 3:45:00 | 225 ÷ 42.195 | 5:20/km |
| 5K in 23:30 | 23.5 ÷ 5 | 4:42/km |
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate pace from distance and time?
Divide your total time (in minutes) by the distance in kilometers. For 10km in 50 minutes: 50 ÷ 10 = 5:00/km. For seconds precision: (time in seconds) ÷ distance.
What is a 5:00/km pace in mph?
5:00/km = 12 km/h = 7.46 mph.
How do I convert my pace from min/km to min/mile?
Multiply by 1.60934. So 5:00/km × 1.60934 = 8:03/mile.
How do I calculate pace from a GPS watch?
Most GPS watches calculate and display pace automatically. Set the display to 'Current Pace' for real-time data, or 'Average Pace' to see your overall pace for the run so far.
